Occupational Therapy
Upon entry to St Catherine’s Post 19 Service, our occupational therapists conduct in-depth assessments to uncover the strengths and needs of the young adult’s functional and independence-based skills. These assessments offer parents, carers, and the individuals themselves a comprehensive understanding of their unique needs.
Each individual then receives a tailored combination of interventions led by an occupational therapist or an occupational therapy assistant, including:
- individual therapy sessions
- paired or small group therapy sessions
- group sessions focusing on independence, travel skills, and community access at least once a week
- equipment, support and resources within residential houses and with families
- collaboration with the individual’s education provider to ensure access to course content
- functional-based sessions within the local town setting, emphasising community engagement and independence
Therapy sessions for the Post 19 Service are centred on refining practical skills and strategies for managing daily life, with a pronounced focus on community participation. These sessions frequently unfold in real-world settings, including travel and community activities, promoting independence.
Every individual within the Post 19 Provision receives an annual review report from their occupational therapist. Individuals undergo reassessment using standardised assessments when transitioning from the Post 19 Provision, providing valuable insights to inform their future decisions and ensure a well-prepared transition to independent living.
